All Things Creative

I am a self-proclaimed lover of all things creative. My life is filled with creative hobbies and endeavors. My love for design and visual art has prompted me to pursue a career in Graphic Design, and I love getting the opportunity to incorporate all my creative loves into my career. One of my favorite descriptions of a Graphic Designer is “a visual problem solver.” I am particularly fond of this idea because I truly believe that design is not all about talent or artistic skill. It also involves a lot of time poured into solving a problem in the most effective and efficient way. A designer must analyze the problem, and come up with a way to solve it, having thoroughly dissected all possible affects the solution might have.

Visual Problem Solving

I enjoy exploring multiple different approaches to solving a problem, but many of my designs feature typographic solutions. I like to be able to use letters to find common patterns, shapes, metaphors, or multiple meanings. I love that type can be used to craft a logo or other design that flows seamlessly with the brand and can stand alone. It is very interesting to me to make a word appear different than it was intended, to be able to manipulate each piece into something new and full of possibilities. The other element that plays a huge part in my design work is color. It is very exciting to me to find a color palate that not only communicates, but also matches the aesthetics of the product or brand. I usually work by choosing one root color which pertains to the thing I am working on, and then building off it. I like to only change the intensity and value of the original color, while staying away from altering the hue. This leads to products with a streamlined color scheme which is interesting but is also attractive to the eye, and only further develops that original root color.

Creative Influences

One of my most significant design influences has been Paula Scher. I find that her typographic solutions are a great departure point for my own ideas. Her bold type which usually covers most of the page is very intriguing. The way she uses type as a communicative element as well as an illustrative focal point of the work is so impressive to me. While I definitely pull a lot of inspiration from Scher's work, I don't enjoy create designs that challenge the viewer as much as Scher does. Her posters and infographics usually push the viewer to work to understand what she is trying to communicate. I prefer to create things that are more attractive and challenge people less. I like making things that are beautiful, that the viewer would want to save because of it’s aesthetic. Most of my work so far has been within the realm of print design and branding, and I would like to continue this work in the future, while developing and honing my skills.
