Blessings Under the Bridge
In my junior year at Whitworth, one of my classes offered me the opportunity to work with a local non-profit organization to help them with any design needs they might have. My group decided to reach out to Blessings Under the Bridge. Blessings is a non-profit located in Spokane Washington with a calling to feed the homeless. They feed them physically by providing a meal for them once a month, but also feed them emotionally by giving them a community and a family by connecting with them on a personal level. They asked if my group would make them a new brochure, a poster for an upcoming event, and a small guide showing the places the homes could receive help that could be handed out at events. Looking back at the designs we came up with, our deigns left much to be desired, but the experience was what was invaluable to me. This project provided the opportunity to get on the ground with a real client and make them something that was going to be actually used.
Northwest Christian
After my experience with Blessings Under the Bridge, I also had the opportunity to do some design work for Northwest Christian High School in Spokane. They asked me to design a 50 page program for their annual musical production, and I was excited to embark on my first real client project. It was a difficult project in that there was a lot of content to sift through. This project really gave me an opportunity to practice my practical file-handling skills, and taught me truly how to organize such a large amount of information in an effective way.
Stephan’s Workshop
The next design job I secured was designing a logo for a local business called Stephan’s Workshop. The shop sells art pieces made by artist Stephan Moss, who is both a painter and a metal and wood sculptor. The only constraints I was given by the client was to make a simple logo that functions only in black and white. This gave me the creative freedom to experiment with a logo and come up with something that reflected the personality of the artist, as well as communicate reliability and professionalism of the business.
etailz
In the fall of my senior year at Whitworth I interviewed for, and was offered the position of, Media & Design Intern at etailz. Etailz is a third-party ecommerce seller. Masters of the online marketplace, they help small business and brands market their products on a new marketplace that is becoming ever-increasingly vital to the success of a business: the internet. Etailz offers many services, but as an intern I am responsible for helping the creative team execute the design and marketing services we offer to our partners.
